I think you're right. Tensions may escalate, there might be contained or larger conflicts like the one now occurring with Israel and Iran, but I don't see this spilling over into a global hot war -- although it's arguable that we're already in WW3, it's just different than what we'd come to expect
And the reason the BRICS are not eager to get into the fray I think is due to risk-aversion, caution and a very long-term view. The leadership in these countries may be as corrupt as you say, but the Chinese and Russians are not rash -- especially not their aging hierarchy. It's not in their culture.

Seems that this is where we're heading -- a low-intensity, protracted emergency, with high tensions of the Orwellian kind, and never a definitive state of all-out war or anything like that.
