There's a great Mexican saying: Pobre Mexico, tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de los EEUU. (poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the US). As a kid & teenager, I spent a lot of time around border towns, so the whole USA thing gets very shifty in those places. Thank God.

"I sometimes think it would be a relief to be able go back to that place where I could rely on society and the state as some parental figure and stop struggling."

So true! Sometimes I feel just the same.

But then I realise that relying on official propaganda instead of trying to figure out the truth can be life-threatening, especially for those belonging to a minority group. Apparently, many Jews did not flee Nazi Germany because they relied on the official German mass media. The society and state told them that everything was fine, there is no danger to them. And this message was corroborated by mass media all over the civilised world - in Sweden and USA as well, where governments deliberately decided not to mention the "final solution" in the press. The Germans were only praised.

I am afraid, the same strategy is chosen now in respect to the Ukrainian government. No matter what they do - kill their own peace negotiator, imprison the opposition leader, use "human shields", they will be only praised, and their crimes neglected. This places all who live in Ukraine in real danger. Going with the flow will not help them. Only knowing the truth and acting accordingly will save their lives.
