'Elon Musk, with his patented anarcho-capitalist cowboy image rides in and saves the day, reforming the operation under the flag of liberty and progress, while the dystopian consequences of the entire technosphere horrorshow continue on unabated.'
Fair points and some of us remember billionaire Pierre Omidyar's Intercept was formed to publish Snowden. So by 2014 Booz-Allen-NSA had full backdoor surveillance we know details about and 95% of the leak still not public. Vast wealth and ethical motives rarely partner but to me what Musk wants more than control is adoration and markers of historic importance to stand like Edison's patents and none of groups losing propaganda powers are Musk fans anyway.
In the two years of massive purging the digital diaspora that sprung up here at Substack and other refugee platforms have been researching, reading and debating while blue check Twitterratti fling smears and repeat talking points. My hope is to watch the floodgates open with Informed vs Uninformed.. now banned docs getting a piece of dirtbags like Gottlieb! *popcorn*
How anyone can trust a billionaire who wants to, among other things, launch 30k satellites (surveillance on steroids) into our skies, is beyond me. That said: agreed. this is just a rebranding. Twitter will remain the totalitarian tool it is.
The structure of software reflects the structure of the organization (or let us say, culture) that created it.
If we can find a social organizational structure that meets the real needs of our day, only then can we expect software that likewise meets those needs.
In the IT world, it is exceptionally and unfortunately common for a company to bring in a new software system and instead of configuring and customizing it to their operations, the company modifies their operations to be consistent with the software. This is because of two main reasons, 1) the company does not define and understand their operational procedures enough to be able to properly translate them into software requirements, and 2) even with a solid set of software requirements, cost overruns can prompt a company to not go forward with customization and stick with more out-of-the-box functionality.
This translates into the software that our society runs on (social media) in that 1) we don't really understand what we want and 2) we don't want to pay or go to any hassle and 3) tech companies are OMG SO GREAT and Elon Musk is MUCH AWESOME and tech is SO WOW so we cede a large amount of decision making capability to them when designing the apps and services we use every day.
So it's not just Twitter or FB, the enemy is us. We are social, emotional creatures and we have been for a long time. Social media is just another way to be social, the new and improved version of the old telephone party line. BUT... you hit on something with private space. Social media is in every nook and cranny of our lives, and I believe a majority of people, and virtually all younger people, have allowed social media use to crowd out private time for contemplation, thought, reading, rest, relaxation, etc. People who don't have a private life are completely different people from those who do. If you eliminate that private life, your life is whatever the stream of social media makes it, your thoughts are whatever the prevailing current on social media is, you live your life as part of a mob, part of a Borg, with a thing or idea having value only relation to the strength of its current on social media (views, likes, shares, etc.) We are all in high school again!
Elon Musk is just another recently minted billionaires. If he wants to keep the status he cannot go against the Secular Ruling Families desires and rules. If he does that he will see the rest of the Billionaires Class start to act against him.
After all his billionaire status is just a mere imaginary wealth (via the terrorist financial markets), and these markets are controlled by the SRF & a few Old Billionaires and Their trillion dollar corporations.

That's true. There's a window of opportunity here as well, some damage might be done through it.
How much of the Twitter mob are bots and/or troll farms? Not the bluechecks - the howling mob.
We may soon find out.
I don't care since there are enough people who are aware of viable alternatives but won't use them. Gab, GETTR, Minds and, the best, Telegram.
I remember when twitter or fb went down, people suddenly jumped on Gab, GETTR and Telegram - proving they knew of them.
Have a read of this re Musk - there seems a bit of a smell about him....

Anarcho-capitalist image is right. A rugged anarcho-capitalist dependent upon favorable tax policy to drive his businesses.
